Habitat For Humanity
Joining up with Habitat I have been able to see and assist in many different areas of the world
My first trip was a day build to Orlando and build we did there. . It was a great experience.
How did I get involved with Habitat is first part I guess. I am part of a group called Star Power, top agents throughout North America who have been acknowledged as the best of the best. We get together annually for a conference and 5 years ago my buddy Steve Westmark
from Minnesota suggested we donate to a house in each city we held our conference in. We did that and raised over $75,000 for each home. Steve then asked me to be part of the build when we were in Orlando. It was awesome and to meet the family we were helping and work with other great volunteers was fantastic.
In fall 2009 I was looking for a chance to do something different. I found a Global Village build in Monesti Romania and that was great because I could tie it into a trip to Brasov where I go with Hope for the Nations. What a great experience! Our Team Leader Jon Gotte did a great job. We got to work with the local affiliate and they were great Hosts. Our local coordinator Cristinia Nica did a fantastic job.
We worked on a 4 plex and installed all the drywall and started even painting.
I am looking forward to going back to see all the local team including our construction boss Constantine!
I then had some changes go on in my life and wanted to do something over Christmas 2009. I found a Global Village build on Molokai Hawaii. The former leper colony has a double digit unemployment and is struggling. I went on the build and had a great time all of the locals who we were building with.
Our construction boss Bill was great, my hammer partner David Kaai was great and Dickey boy was always keeping it light and fun. The trips was great in that we went from sub floor to ceiling joists in the time we were there. Spending New Years somewhere warm is also a great plan.
I have recently applied to Habitat Canada to become a Global Village Team Leader so I can lead teams and assist around the world. I am headed back to Romania in September with a few friends for a few days to show them what we did and to work and introduce them to Habitat. I want to encourage others to join and to belong. The families are always so thankful for what we do yet I am so thankful to them and the local affiliates for all they do on a daily basis. They give me back way more than I can ever give to them.
Check out www.habitat.ca in Canada and www.habitat.org in USA to find out how you can get involved.
If you would ever like to join me on a trip please email me and then lets start talking!
